An interesting composite for a friend’s short film.

I was catching up with a friend from my time in Chicago and we were exchanging work, he mentioned he was looking for advice on a VFX shot. He wanted his shot to mimic the Xray effect from ‘The Virgin Suicides’.

I wanted to make the VFX iterations as streamlined as possible, the director was in Chicago and I was in LA. I designed a simple burn-in slate for each rendered version. Email threads are notoriously difficult to read so having the notes on each version cleared that up completely.

The burn-ins were also present on the shot itself. It was a homebrew pipeline but keeping each version updated proved easy. I used my default shot code and numbering for this - I want my work to be as professional as possible. The main title overlay was added as security to keep the films footage safe.

The versions were completed over the weekends, or whenever I had spare to dedicate. The director was always super appreciative of my efforts and gave me a lot of freedom, the shot is a relatively simple 2d composite but it was still a creative and technical challenge.

The final trailer, it was a hugely enjoyable task and I’m really happy to have contributed to such a funny and heart felt indie short film.
