Spectre

Invisible layout tasks for Daniel Craig’s 4th outing as Bond.

Just before I left DNEG, I helped out on another secret agent picture. The task here was to extend a shot where Bond looks up to see the bomb damage. I matched the tracked camera and framed up the hole on the upper floor.

The tasks where I get to combine photography with CG are some of my favourite tasks, here I was flushing out the BG of the underground dock. I added boats, pipes, AC units and walls to create a sense that this was a functional area.

The green area was a mixture of matte painting and CG elements, a first pass of animation was also delivered to the animation department to add the finishing touches.

This was an interesting task, we had to recreate London’s Southbank area on the opposite side of the Thames. Additionally, I blocked in the Helicopters general movement in the frame.

A supercut of the layout and 1st pass of the helicopter animation. I did a few versions where I played with the scale and positioning on the Spectre HQ across the water. As that building doesn’t exist in reality I was allowed to take a few liberties.

The film was shot in the summer but takes place in a wet wintery London, I replaced all the leafy green foliage with a variety of bare trees. A rewarding task as the final composite is seamless.
