Early in 2023 I took the opportunity to join Wonder Dynamics. I am always pushing myself to learn new things in VFX and how AI in particular can be used in VFX. I was actively using and working with an AI platform called Wonder Studio to complete a series of actor replacement shots.
The tool would analyse the plate, remove the actor, clean the area, roto animate, light and composite the CG character into the shot. I was tasked with refining the outputs. Certain shots failed to deliver the required fidelity and I would delegate tasks to my small team, mostly tweaking the animation in Blender or taking the original plate and performing the standard clean plating workflow.
The completed short was shot in a few hours on the western street backlot set at Universal. The shots were delivered in just a few days. I helped with edit direction, general shot work, and making sure the team was squared away. I feel very privileged to have had access to a cutting-edge AI toolset, especially as AI is becoming a very hot topic in the film industry.
