Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation

A gadget is not impossible just highly improbable.

The gadgets in the Mission: Impossible franchise are always high concept but also grounded in reality. I was asked to translate the lock pick design from concept to a fully articulate device.

Gadgets are like buses, you wait and two come at once. For this safe cracking sequence I essentially designed the cogs to match the live action props and used multiple layers to convey the complexity.

Rogue Nation was widely lauded for Tom Cruise’s monumental stunt. Here I simply animated and textured the door. Another personal goal, worked on a film starring Tom Cruise!

DNEG really know how to use their generalists and another assignment was to create several CG lineups for the opera theater where a fight takes place. I would go in and make sure to get the correct placement for the matte paintings and set extensions.

The 2D team made everything look totally seamless.

Assignments kept coming and I was asked to collect and research airstrip related objects to help sell the Military base location.

I selected references that offered the most interesting silhouettes, these props were small on screen so they could be relatively basic in construction.

I constructed several variations for the background structures from the main published model. I added small details like drain pips, aerials, secondary structures to reduce the repetition throughout the sequence.

The IMF gadgets I helped to conceptualise were interestingly covered with light smatterings of other work I was involved in.
